FAMILY HISTORY: MADDEN

THE FAMILY OF MARIE MADDEN

CENSUS INFORMATION:

Marie Madden, aged 7 years, was living with her parents at the time of the 1910 Census but is not listed with her family in the 1920 Census, when she would have been about 17 or 18 years old. I did find an 18 year old Marie Madden living in nearby Cranberry Township, which I believe is William and Ella's daughter:

I was unable to find Marie in the 1930 Census either as Marie Madden or Marie Greenfield, then my cousin Carole Madden informed me that Marie had been married twice and that her first husband's surname was Lineman. With that information, I soon found the family in 1930:

1: Living at 114 Second Street North, Greenville, Mercer County, Pennsylvania.
2: Marie and her family were living in a rented house and paying $15 a month rent. Her future second husband, William Greenfield, was living a few houses along at number 107.
3: The 1940 census schedules recorded information differently than previous censuses. Instead of recording the birthplace of each persons' parents they chose to select certain individuals to record 'Supplementary Questions'. In this case, that was Neal Lineman, whose father were listed as born in Pennsylvania. However, the Census Enumerator did not fill the form in correctly and the space for the mother's birthplace contained "English", the answer to the next question, 'Language spoken in home in earliest childhood'.
4: Ellsworth Lineman was a government worker with the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps). According to Wikipedia, the Civilian Conservation Corps was, "a public work relief program that operated from 1933 to 1942 in the United States for unemployed, unmarried men from relief families, ages 17–23".
5: The above information is taken from scanned images at http://1940census.archives.gov.
