FAMILY HISTORY: MADDEN

THE FAMILY OF WILLIAM MADDEN

CENSUS INFORMATION:

William Madden and Mary "Ella" McCue were married in 1901. Although a couple of the facts are incorrect, I believe that the following record is William in 1900. I have not been able to find Ella in 1900.

I believe that Mary "Ella" (McCue) Madden died shortly after the birth of their youngest son, William, who was born in 1911. On the day of the 1920 Census young William was staying with his father's sister Mary Ann and her husband, William Irwin Karns.

Sometime after the date of the 1920 census William moved to Lemont, Illinois. On the night of the 1930 census he was visiting at his mother's house in Oil City, but this must have caused a bit of confusion with the family he was lodging with in Lemont, as they first entered his name on the census schedule then crossed it out:

William Madden and Mary Helbig were married in about 1932, and at the time of the 1940 Census he was still living with her family in Lemont:

1940 CENSUS OF LEMONT, COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS:
NAME: RELATION: RACE: SEX: AGE: STATUS: OCCUPATION: BIRTHPLACE:
Louise Helbig Head White F 75 Single - Illinois
Frances Helbig Sister White F 79 Single - Illinois
Elizabeth Helbig Sister White F 79 Single - Illinois
William Madden Brother-in-Law White M 65 Married Watchman, WPA Pennsylvania
Mary Madden Sister White F 65 Married - Illinois
Joseph Helbig Brother White M 64 Single Watchman, WPA Illinois
1: Living at 310 State Street, Lemont, Illinois.
2: The 1940 census schedules recorded information differently than previous censuses. Instead of recording the birthplace of each persons' parents they chose to select certain individuals to record 'Supplementary Questions'. In this case, that was Louise Helbig, who recorded that both parents were born in Germany and that German was the language spoken at home during her childhood.
3: William Madden and Joseph Helbig were classed as government workers, working for the WPA (the Works Project Administration). According to Wikipedia, "...the WPA provided jobs and income to the unemployed during the Great Depression in the United States. Between 1935 and 1943, the WPA provided almost eight million jobs".
4: The above information is taken from scanned images at http://1940census.archives.gov.
