FAMILY HISTORY: BOOCOCK

THE FAMILY OF RICHARD & MARGARET BOOCOCK

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION:

THE YORKSHIRE CONNECTION:
I have not yet been able to find the birth or baptism records for Richard Boocock or the record of his marriage to Margaret Higson. I suspect that they were married in Yorkshire for several reasons:
1: Boocock is a very common name in Yorkshire, less common in Lancashire.
2: Margaret's maiden name, Higson, is also a common name in Yorkshire.
3: John Higson, husband of their daughter Ellen, was from Yorkshire.
4: A main road runs from the Halifax area of Yorkshire into the Bury / Heywood area of Lancashire.

INFORMATION FROM DIRECTORIES HELD AT THE LANCASHIRE RECORD OFFICE:
"The South Lancashire Directory 1824 - 25", under Whitefield:

Boocock, Richard, Saddler, Stand Lane & Besses O'th' Barn
"The Commercial Directory of Cheshire, Derbyshire & Lancashire 1828", under Radcliffe &c: Saddlers:

Boocock, Richard, Radcliffe Bridge & Besses o'th' Barn.

PILKINGTON:
Pilkington was a township in Lancashire bounded on the southwest and north by the river Irwell and The Rock, on the northeast by Whittle Brook, and the south by the high lands towards Heaton and the clough towards Prestwich. The township contained Unsworth in the east, Whitefield in the centre, and Outwood in the west.

Stand Lane, Radcliffe Bridge, and Besses o'th' Barn are small communities in the same area.

The principal road was from Manchester to Bury, and there is a railway station at Whitefield.

Pilkington ceased to exist as a township in 1894.
