FAMILY HISTORY: MORTON

THE FAMILY OF JAMES FLANNERY

 

James Flannery was born in Boyle, County Roscommon, Ireland, the son of Malachy Flannery, a stonemason, and Winifred Flemming.

When he was in his mid to late twenties he moved to Liverpool where he met Florence Eliza, the elder sister of his friend Albert Hennessy.

Florence, the daughter of William and Mary Hennessy, was born in Liverpool in 1868. James and Florence were married at St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church in Chorlton, Manchester on 5 July 1890.

At the time of the 1901 census they were living in Accrington where James worked as a cycle repair-man.

Florence's sister-in-law Agnes, the wife of Albert Hennessy, died in 1899 and James and Florence took in her 4 year old daughter Florence "Florrie" Hennessy and raised her as their own.

2: The surname of James' niece is a mistake in the census. Her real surname was Hennessy.

 

Florence Flannery died on Christmas day 1908 in the Prestwich Lunatic Asylum, aged 40 years. James moved with his young niece first to Fairhaven Road Penwortham, near Preston, then to 32 Stocks Road, Ashton-on-Ribble, Preston, where he met Alice (Morton) Critchley, who was living at 44 Stocks Road.
