FAMILY HISTORY: MORTON

THE FAMILY OF MARY BAINES

Mary Baines was a member of a large and well established family in the Claughton area. Her parents, Barnaby and Margery Baines had several children. In addition, Mary had many aunts, uncles and cousins living in the Claughton area. Judging by various records and census returns, the name Barnaby seemed to be an especially popular name in the Baines family.
Mary's mother Margery died in Claughton-on-Brock and was buried on 11 February 1837 in the churchyard of St. Helen's Parish Church (C. of E.) in Churchtown, Garstang. The Burial Register records that she was the wife of Barnaby Baines and was a Roman Catholic.
Barnaby Baines Sr. was listed in the 1841 Census with his son Barnaby, his daughter Mary, and three children that I presume to have been his grandchildren:

1841 CENSUS OF CLAUGHTON-ON-BROCK, LANCASHIRE:
NAME: SEX: AGE: OCCUPATION: BORN IN THE COUNTY?:
Barnaby Baines M 70 Gardener Yes
Barnaby Baines M 28 Gamekeeper Yes
Mary Baines F 25 - Yes
Mary Baines F 12 - Yes
William Baines M 8 - Yes
Margaret Baines F 6 - Yes
John Brown M 50 Labourer Yes
NOTE:
1: Living in Claughton-on-Brock.

As the 1841 Census did not record people's relationship to one another or their marital status it is difficult to determine who the younger children are.
Mary Baines and John Morton were married a few months after this Census was taken.
By the time of the 1851 Census Barnaby Baines Sr. was living with his daughter and son-in-law:

1851 CENSUS OF CLAUGHTON-ON-BROCK, LANCASHIRE:
NAME: RELATION: CONDITION: SEX: AGE: OCCUPATION: BIRTHPLACE:
Barnaby Baines F-I-L Widower M 84 Gardener Claughton, Lancashire
Mary Poulton Nurse Unm. F 50 Gardener Claughton, Lancashire
NOTE:
1: Living at Claughton Brow, Claughton-on-Brock.
2: Mary Poulton was Barnaby's live-in nurse. Her occupation as a gardener seems to have been an error.
3: F-I-L = Father-in-Law.

Mary's father, Barnaby Baines Sr. died at age 86 and was buried on 24 April 1855. Like his wife almost 20 years earlier, he was buried in the churchyard at St. Helen's Parish Church. Also like his wife, the Burial Register records that he was a Roman Catholic.
