FAMILY HISTORY: MORTON

THE FAMILY OF ROBERT & DOROTHY CARTER

INFORMATION FROM WILLS:

Robert Carter
Robert Carter, Yeoman, of Goosnargh, wrote his Will in 1776 appointing his sons Thomas and James Carter, and William Clarkson his executors.

He first directed that his debts, testamentary and funeral expenses be paid out of his estate.

His estate and his goods, chattels, etc., were to be sold and the money raised invested with the interest paid half yearly to his three children, James, Dorothy and William, until they reached the age of 14 years.

His Will also mentions his three children by his first wife, namely Thomas, Jenny and Robert.

His lands were to go to his eldest son Thomas, with £50.00 chargeable to his daughter Jenny and his son Robert upon turning 21 years of age.

To his wife Dorothy, he left his feather bed, sheets, and other convenient bedclothes.

His younger children, James, Dorothy and William were to receive a legacy of £40.00 each when they reached the age of 21 years.

His wife and children were to have sufficient maintenance while she remained his widow, but if she remarried or miscarried (?!?) she would be entirely excluded and cut off.

The Will was signed and sealed 15 May 1776, and was witnessed by James Cros, Richard Holms, and William Gerrard.

Probate was granted on 21 August 1776.
