FAMILY HISTORY: MORTON

THE FAMILY OF JOHN MORTON

John Morton's father was also called John Morton. That's about all I know of him for certain.

The 1767 Register of Papists records that John Morton Jr. was not born in Claughton but gives no indication as to where he was born. I suspect that he may have been born in or near Goosnargh, Lancashire - based on the Will of a man who I believe to have been his grandfather:

James Morton, of Goosnargh, wrote his Will on 26 January 1709/10 in which he mentioned several members of his family, including his eldest son William Morton of Goosnargh, his sons John Morton and Thomas Morton - both of Claughton - and his daughters Elizabeth, Dorothy, Jane and Anna. He mentioned "...my now wife Alice Morton..." and his brother Thomas Morton of Claughton.

I have not been able to make a positive connection between James Morton of Goosnargh and the John Morton of Claughton that I know to have been my great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather, but I will continue to search for that connection.
