FAMILY HISTORY: NORRIS

THE FAMILY OF JOHN ASCROFT

John Ascroft is a bit of a mystery. According to his marriage record, he was the son of William Ascroft, a farmer at Croston, and according to all available Census records he was born c. 1843 in Tarleton, Lancashire. However, I have searched the birth indexes and baptism records for the churches in the area and can find no record of his baptism under the name John Ascroft.

When his father died in 1879 he left a Will in which he refers to his "reputed son", John Taylor Ascroft. This is the first record I can find that mentions a middle name - and it is the maiden name of his mother Elizabeth. I initially suspected that John Ascroft was Elizabeth's son born before she married William Ascroft, but when I found her Will she also refers to her "reputed son", John Taylor Ascroft. In these instances, the word "reputed" may indicate that John was not their natural son. Formal adoption did not exist at this time and adoptions would have been informal arrangements. It is possible that John was a relative of Elizabeth's, hence the name Taylor being used as a middle name, and that she and William "adopted" him as their first child.

They were not yet married at the time of the 1841 Census and by the time of the 1851 Census John was living with them as their son:
