MONUMENT INSCRIPTIONS: "In loving Memory of John Ascroft died 15th September 1905 aged 62 years. Also, his Wife Jane Ascroft died 18th February 1909 aged 6l years. Also, Catherine their Daughter died 28th September 1905 aged 32 years, (side) Jane Adelaide, Granddaughter died 22nd April 1953 aged 57 years." 1: | The monument inscription is a bit misleading. Because it doesn't mention their daughter Catherine's married name it could lead one to believe that she died unmarried. Similarly, because it doesn't give their granddaughter's full name you could be forgiven for thinking that Jane Adelaide's surname was Ascroft when it was actually Baker. Even more confusing is that the inscription doesn't mention that Catherine isn't actually buried in Croston. She is buried in the churchyard of St Mary's Church in Penwortham. |
