THE FAMILY OF SARAH ANNE HUMBER

 

Sarah Anne Humber was born in Preston in 1868, the daughter of James Humber and Sarah Jane Graves. She was baptized at St John's Parish Church in Preston on 13 November 1868.

Her father was the only son of John Humber Esq., a wealthy cotton merchant and a partner (with his brother William) in the firm of Humber Brothers. Both brothers were town councilors and each served a term as Mayor of Preston. William in 1854-55 and James in 1857-58. Sarah Anne's elder brother John also served a term as Mayor of Preston in 1891-92.

James Humber was baptized at St John's Parish Church in Preston on 7 July 1834, the son of John Humber and Esther Dandy.

James married Sarah Jane Graves at St John's Parish Church, Preston on 2 November 1858. Sarah Jane was the daughter of Henry Graves esq., head of Preston Bank.

Unfortunately, Sarah Anne's father died on 24 April 1870, when she was less than 18 months old.
DEATH NOTICE:
"On the 24th inst., James Humber Esq., of Oak House, Fulwood, and the only son of John Humber Esq., Winckley-square, Preston, aged 36 years."

Sarah Jane Humber never re-married and died in Southport, Lancashire on 14 August 1905.

Sarah Jane's Will mentions her son John of Preston and her daughters Agnes McKeand, Sarah Ann Humber, and Catherine Whitehorne, as well as a grandson John Sherwood Humber.
