FAMILY HISTORY: NORRIS

THE LIFE OF ELLEN BRAMWELL

Ellen Bramwell is a bit of a mystery to me. She was born in Croston on 3 December 1834 and baptized in the parish church, St Michael and All Angels, at Croston on 28 December 1834. At the time of the 1841 Census she was a 7 year old girl living with her mother and step-father:

1841 CENSUS OF CROSTON, LANCASHIRE:
NAME: SEX: AGE: OCCUPATION: BORN IN THE COUNTY?
James Iddon M 20 Shoemaker Journeyman Yes
Jane Iddon F 35 - Yes
Richard Bramwell M 14 Hand Loom Weaver Yes
Ellen Bramwell F 7 - Yes
NOTES:
1: Living at Hillock, Croston. (H.O.107, 525/1144, page 16)
2: Richard and Ellen Bramwell were Jane's children by her first marriage.
3: The above information is taken from the census returns on microfilm at the Lancashire Record Office.

The next record I can find of Ellen is the 1861 Census, when she was one of about a dozen servants working on a large estate in Cheshire:

1861 CENSUS OF HATHERTON, CHESHIRE:
NAME: RELATION: CONDITION: SEX: AGE: OCCUPATION: BIRTHPLACE:
Ellen Bramwell Servant Unm. F 25 House maid Croston, Lancashire
NOTES:
1: Living Broomlands, Hatherton, Cheshire. (RG9-2617, folio 49, page 8)
2: The above information is taken from the census returns on microfilm at the Lancashire Record Office.

I know that Ellen was still alive and unmarried when her uncle Hugh Norris wrote his Will on 9 January 1867 but she is not mentioned in the Will of her uncle Robert on 10 January 1868 or in her uncle Thomas' Will on 14 June 1872. I have searched for a death and marriage reference and I've searched the Census returns but can't find anything conclusive. However, I did find a possible death in Cheshire in 1867 but the record says that she was 39 when she would have actually been 33.

Despite the discrepancy in the age, this is probably the correct death record for Ellen Bramwell of Croston.
