FAMILY HISTORY: NORRIS

THE LIFE OF JOHN NORRIS Jr

John Norris Jr., the ninth and last child of John and Ellen Norris, never married and had no known children.

He was just one month old when his mother died in 1807, and her death may have been as a direct result of his birth. He was 7 years old when his father remarried in 1814, and grew up at Mill House End, the family farm on the outskirts of Croston, Lancashire.

After his father's death in 1830, John and his elder brother Thomas went to live with their uncle Thomas Norris at his estate in Redvales, Bury. When the elder Thomas Norris acquired the Howick House estate in Howick, near Penwortham, John and Thomas moved there with him.

John seems to have been a sickly young man and, like his brother Thomas, never seems to have had a proper job. In 1841, at the age of 34 years, the census described him as a "Gentleman" and it appears that he was being supported by his wealthy uncle.

John Norris Jr. died at his uncle's mansion, Howick House, on Saturday the 5th of January 1850, a little more than 3 weeks after his 43rd birthday.
