The Family of Amelia Ellen Green

John Green, age 25, bachelor, shuttle maker, of Friargate, son of the late James Green, shuttle maker, and Sarah Harley, age 23, spinster, weaver, of Cold Bath Street, the daughter of the late Robert Harley, were married at St John's Parish Church, Preston on 25 January 1845, after Banns, by E Walker, Curate. The witnesses were John Hitchen & Mary Harley.

Sarah's surname was spelled Harling in the register but that of her sister Mary was spelled correctly as Harley. Everyone but the Curate signed the register their marks.

MARRIAGE NOTICE:

"MARRIAGES...at the Parish Church...on Saturday last, Mr. John Green to Miss Sarah Harling (sic)"

John and Sarah Green had a least six children, the youngest of whom was their daughter Amelia Ellen, who was baptized on 23 April 1858 at St John's Parish Church by John Shaw.

By the night of the 1861 Census the family were living in Seeds Yard, Preston:

Sarah Green died at 59 Wellfield Road in 1874, and was buried in the C of E section of Preston Cemetery:

	Burial No. 21871, 22 August 1874. Sarah Green, of 59 Wellfield Road, age 53, Private grave J 842, 1st interment, 20 feet deep. Service performed by E.H. Hood.

About 8 months after his wife's death, John Green remarried. He married Margaret Grime on 5 May 1875 at St John's Parish Church in Preston.

'Green, John, shuttle maker, Sizer Street, and beerhouse, Maudland Inn, 1 Pedder Street'

John Green died at The Maudland Inn pub in that same year and was buried with his first wife Sarah:

	Burial No. 25242, 9 May 1877, John Green, of 1 Pedder Street, age 57, Private grave J 842, 2nd interment, 16 feet deep. Service performed by W.F. Newton.

From the National Probate Index, 1877:

	'Green, John, 30 May, The Will of John Green, late of Preston in the County of Lancaster, Innkeeper and Shuttle Maker, who died 4 May 1877 at Preston, was proved at Lancaster by Robert Green and Richard Fell Green, Shuttle Makers, the sons, and John Butler, Commercial Traveller, all of Preston, the Executors. Effects under £1000.00'

In a long a detailed Will, John Green mentions his wife Margaret and his children Hannah Butler, Robert Green, Elizabeth Ann Green, Richard Fell Green, William Green, Amelia Ellen Green, and his son-in-law John Butler.

After the death of their father the two youngest children - who were by then adults - went to stay with their eldest sister Hannah and her husband John Butler:
