THE FAMILY OF MARY AGNES BRYAN

 

Mary Agnes Bryan was the daughter of James Bryan and Alice Turner, who were married in Warton in 1867 and had ten children.

Mary Agnes, their fifth child, was born in Carnforth in 1876 and was baptized at St Oswald's Parish Church in Warton on 27 August 1876. The baptism register lists their abode as Carnforth and her father's occupation as Railway Guard.

James and Alice lost their second child, Elizabeth, in December 1872, aged 3 years and 6 months, and by the night of the 1881 Census they had six surviving children:

At the time of the 1891 Census Mary Agnes was living away from home and working as a live-in servant to John Hartley and family in Warton:

By 1891 Mary Agnes' parent's had three more children and had moved to Hunter Street in Carnforth, where they were to live for the rest of their lives:

By 1901 Mary Agnes had married Robert Cornthwaite Swarbrick and had their first child. Her parents continued to live at the Hunter Street address and were still there at the time of both the 1901 and 1911 Censuses.

James Bryan died at 13 Hunter Street and was buried at St Oswald's Church in Warton on 12 October 1914, aged 74 years.

Alice (Turner) Bryan died at 13 Hunter Street, and was buried with her husband at St Oswald's on 8 April 1930, aged 82 years. Their headstone inscription does not record their dates of death and says simply,
"In Memory of
James and Alice Bryan
Also their son Jim
At Rest"
