2:	By the night of this Census Robert and Mary Ann had been married for just over two years but did not apparently have any children. It is possible that they lost a child during this period.

2:	According to my notes. their son Charles was born in 1879 and died in 1894 - yet he is not listed with the family on the night of this Census. It may be that he actually died prior to this Census.

2:	Although not listed a Scholars, Robert and Mary Ann's younger children were probably still in school.
3:	Robert's sister Elizabeth and three of her sons were staying with him on the night of the Census but there is no way to know whether this was just a visit or a more long-term stay. The whereabouts of her husband George is unknown at this time.
4:	The occupation of Elizabeth Turnbull's two elder sons has been the subject of much discussion between myself and my distant cousins David Swarbrick and Derek Sadler and the entry in the original return has been crossed through, written over and otherwise obliterated. The word Dock L(abourer) was also written on the form and then crossed through.
