FAMILY HISTORY: SWARBRICK
THE FAMILY OF JANE CORNTHWAITE
Jane Cornthwaite was the daughter of William Cornthwaite and Elizabeth Baines, who were married at St Chad's Parish Church in the village of Claughton, near Lancaster. Elizabeth lived in the village and William lived in Melling, a village about 4 miles south. The couple moved about in the early years, living in Aughton, where their first child was born; then Halton, where their second child was born; before finally settling near Bolton-le-Sands, where the rest of their eight children were born. Jane, their fifth child, was born in Bolton-le-Sands and was baptized at the Parish Church, Holy Trinity, on 6 March 1841. She was baptized by Robert Gibson, Vicar, and the register entry describes her as the daughter of William and Elizabeth Cornthwaite of Bolton, Farmer. When Jane was 10 years old she lost her mother, who died on 16 September 1851 and was buried 3 days later in the churchyard at Holy Trinity, aged 46 years. Jane's father, William Cornthwaite, died in Bilsborrow, Lancashire on 6 January 1868, and was buried at Holy Trinity Church in Bolton-le-Sands on 9 January 1868, aged 67 years. After William's death, Jane and her unmarried brothers became joint tenants of a farm in Billsborrow, where they were all living at the time of the 1871 Census: |
