FAMILY HISTORY: SWARBRICK

THE FAMILY OF MARY HODGSON

Mary's parents were called John and Elizabeth Hodgson. They were probably married sometime before 1781 when Mary was born. Mary was baptised at the Parish Church in Hambleton, Lancashire on 11 November 1781.

Another daughter, Susan, was baptized at the same church on 18 January 1786 but died in infancy. She was buried on 28 January 1786, only 10 days after her baptism.

Mary's brother George was baptised in Hambleton on 28 September 1788.

Much of what we know about George, who died in September 1839, comes from his Will dated 6 September 1839. It tells us that he settled in Worcester where he worked as a Supervisor of Excise. His wife Betty was the principal beneficiary of his Will but he also mentions "...my father John Hodgson, formerly of Walton-le-Dale in the County of Lancaster but now of Preston..." After the death of his wife and father the trust monies from his estate were to be paid "...unto my sister Mary, the wife of William Swarbrick of Churchtown in the County of Lancaster, miller..." and after Mary's death to her living children.

Each of Mary's seven surviving children would have eventually been entitled to £228 15s 8d, for a total of £1601 9s 8d - a handsome sum.

Mary's mother Elizabeth died on 11 April 1829, aged 69 years and was buried on 15 April 1829 in the churchyard at St. Helen's Church in Churchtown, near Garstang, Lancashire.

Monument Inscription:

"In Memory of Betty, the wife of John Hodgson, who departed this life on
the 11th April 1829, aged 69 years"
Elizabeth Hodgson's grave
Burial Register:

"Buried 15 April 1829, Hodgson, Elizabeth wife of John, of Walton (age 69)"

NOTE: Based on this information I calculate that Elizabeth was born c. 1759/60.

We know from George Hodgson's Will that his father John was alive in September 1839. I found an entry in the 1841 Census of Preston that may be Mary's father:

1841 CENSUS OF PRESTON, LANCASHIRE:
NAME: SEX: AGE: OCCUPATION: BORN IN THE COUNTY?
John Hodgson M 80 Farmer Yes
NOTE:
1: Living on Avenham Lane, Preston. (H.O.107-498, folio 1409)

If this is Mary's father, and taking the rounding of ages in the 1841 Census into consideration, he would have been born sometime between 1755 and 1761.

I have not yet found the burial record for John Hodgson.

NOTE: Thanks go to Christine Ackers for much of the information regarding George Hodgson.
