FAMILY HISTORY: MADDEN
THE FAMILY OF WILLIAM MESSIAH GREENFIELD:
William Messiah Greenfield was the son of Archibald C Greenfield and Margaret "Maggie" Proud. Archibald was a native of Scotland and Maggie was a native of either Ohio or Pennsylvania - the records are contradictory. They were probably married in Mercer County, Pennsylvania in about 1875 and had 8 children. It would appear that one or two children did not survive infancy - again, the records are contradictory - but by 1880 the family were settled in Stoneboro, Mercer County, and had their first three known children - John, born about 1875; Susan, who was born 19 December 1877; and Elizabeth Jane, who was born 11 November 1879: |

NOTES: | |
1: | Living in Stoneboro, Mercer County, Pennsylvania. |
2: | The family surname appears to have been misspelled 'Greefield' on the census schedule. |
3: | This is the only instance where Margaret's place of birth was listed as Ohio and I suspect that it is an error. |
4: | Archibald's parents were recorded as having been born in Scotland. Margaret's father was recorded as having been born in England but the space for her mother's birthplace was left blank. |

Sadly, the 1890 Census was destroyed in a fire, but I do know that the family remained in Mercer County and had at least three further children between 1880
and 1900, namely - Sarah, who was born 28 August 1881; William Messiah, who was born 16 December 1885; and Pearl, who was born 15 October 1887. Also during that period, the older three daughters married and started families of their own - Susie Greenfield married John W Jackson on 26 February 1894 (with her father's consent) and had at least 11 children; Elizabeth Jane Greenfield married Joseph Coulter Perrine on 23 October 1899 (each with their fathers' consent) and had at least 10 children; Sarah Greenfield married James M Campbell on 20 December 1899 (with her father's consent) and had at least 12 children. Although I cannot find any record of his death or burial, I suspect that Archibald died between December 1899, when he gave his consent for Sarah to marry, and June 1900, the date of that Census: |

NOTES: | |
1: | Living in Jackson Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania. |
2: | Margaret "Maggie" Greenfield is listed as married rather than widowed on the census schedule. This may be an error or it may be that Archibald was still living but elsewhere on the night of the census. She is also listed as the mother of 8 children, with 6 living. |
3: | John W and Susie Jackson had been married 7 years and Susie as having had 3 children - all living. |
4: | John W Jackson's parents and Maggie's father were recorded as having been born in England. William and Pearl's father was recorded as having been born in Scotland. In all other cases the parents were listed as born in Pennsylvania. |
5: | Susie (Greenfield) Jackson could not read or write, Maggie (Proud) Greenfield could read but not write, William and Pearl were attending school and could read and write. |
