3: The census also records that William and Myrtle could read and write, and that the older two boys could read but not write. The space for showing people who were attending school was left blank for the boys and I suspect this to have been an error.

1940 CENSUS OF GREENVILLE BOROUGH, MERCER COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA:
NAME: RELATION: RACE: SEX: AGE: STATUS: OCCUPATION: BIRTHPLACE:
William E. Greenfield Head White M 62 Widower Car Inspector Pennsylvania
1: Living at 107 Second Street North, Greenville, Mercer County, Pennsylvania.
2: Although listed as a widower, William was actually divorced. His first wife outlived him by 20 years.
3: William owned his home, which was valued at $2350. His future second wife, Marie Lineman, was living a few houses along at number 114.
4: The 1940 census schedules recorded information differently than previous censuses. Instead of recording the birthplace of each persons' parents they chose to select certain individuals to record 'Supplementary Questions'. In this case, that was William, whose father were listed as born in Pennsylvania. However, the Census Enumerator did not fill the form in correctly and the space for the mother's birthplace contained "English", the answer to the next question, 'Language spoken in home in earliest childhood'.
5: The Supplementary Questions also show that William was not a veteran, had a Social Security Number, and worked as a Car Inspector at Bessemer - The Bessemer and Lake Erie Rail Road.
6: The above information is taken from scanned images at http://1940census.archives.gov.
