FAMILY HISTORY: MADDEN

THE FAMILY OF HARRY T & CLARA E HANNA

CENSUS INFORMATION:

I had trouble finding Harry and Clara in the 1930 Census until I discovered that they had been incorrectly recorded under Clara's maiden surname. They were living in a rented house just a few doors away from Clara's grandmother, Anna (Carroll) Madden, who lived at 103 Warren Street. I have shown them below as the schedule is written but this is certainly Harry and Clara Hanna and their three children:

1930 CENSUS OF OIL CITY, VENANGO COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA:
NAME: RELATION: RACE: SEX: AGE: STATUS: OCCUPATION: BIRTHPLACE:
Harry Madden Head White M 22 Married Truck Driver Pennsylvania
Clara Madden Wife White F 23 Married None Pennsylvania
Harold Madden Son White M 5 Single None Pennsylvania
Geraldine Madden Daughter White F 4 Single None Pennsylvania
Frances Madden Daughter White F 2 Single None Pennsylvania
NOTES:
1: Living at 109 Warren Street. Oil City, Venango County, Pennsylvania.
2: The census schedule records that Harry's and Clara's parents were all born in Pennsylvania.
3: The ages given for Harry and Clara are off by a couple of years. Harry would have actually been about 25 and Clara would have been 26. The ages for Geraldine and Frances were difficult to read. It appears that Geraldine was 4 years and 1 month old and Frances was 2 and a half years old.
4: The above information is taken from scanned images at www.ancestry.co.uk.

Frances Hanna died in a tragic fire, of which I have no details. In the 1940 Census they were listed under their correct surname:

1940 CENSUS OF OIL CITY, VENANGO COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA:
NAME: RELATION: RACE: SEX: AGE: STATUS: OCCUPATION: BIRTHPLACE:
Harry T Hanna Head White M 39 Married Truck Driver Pennsylvania
Clara E Hanna Wife White F 35 Married - Pennsylvania
Harold H Hanna Son White M 16 Single - Pennsylvania
Geraldine Hanna Daughter White F 14 Single - Pennsylvania
1: Living at 620 Bissell Avenue, Oil City, Venango County, Pennsylvania.
2: Harry was actually younger than Clara and would have been about 35, while Clara was actually 36.
3: Harry and Clara were living in a rented house but Harry refused to tell the Enumerator what the monthly rent was.
4: The 1940 census schedules recorded information differently than previous censuses. Instead of recording the birthplace of each persons' parents they chose to select certain individuals to record 'Supplementary Questions'. No one in their household was asked these extra questions.
5: Harry Hanna was a truck driver for a Wholesale & Retail Hardware but refused to divulge his salary.
6: The above information is taken from scanned images at http://1940census.archives.gov.
