THE FAMILY OF CHARLES LAWRENCE CONDON

 

Charles Lawrence Condon was the son of James E Condon and Rose Cosgrove. James, the son of Michael and Julia Condon, and Rose, the daughter of William and Margaret Cosgrove, were married by Father Thomas Graham at St Joseph's Catholic Church in Oil City, Venango County, Pennsylvania on 12 May 1891. At the time of their marriage James was 22 and Rose was 18. As Rose was under 21, she needed her father consent to marry.

James and Rose had at least 12 children but 3 of those died young. At the time of the 1910 Census they family were living in a rented house in Oil City:

4: James' and Rose's parents were shown as having been born in Ireland.

I have made a thorough search of the 1920 Census but cannot find any trace of Charles or his family. Sometime between the dates of the 1910 and 1930 Censuses, James E Condon died. By 1930, the widowed Rose was the head of a large household:

2: The census records that everyone but the infant Coletta could read and write, and that Vera, Jack and Betty were attending school.
3: The census also records that Rose's father was born in Ireland (the Irish Free State) and her mother was born in Scotland, but the earlier census records show that both parents were born in Ireland.

Rose (Cosgrove) Condon died on Saturday, 20 October 1951 and her obituary was published 2 days later in The Titusville Herald:
'Mrs Rose Condon'
     'Mrs Rose Condon, 78, of Oil City died at noon Saturday at the Oil City Hospital after an extended illness.
      She was born on Sept. 9th, 1873, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Cosgrove and Cranberry Township. She was married to James Condon on May 12th, 1891 at St Joseph's Church in Oil City. Mr. Condon preceded his wife in death.
     The deceased is survived by three daughters, Mrs. D.E. Gontz of Harrisburg, Mrs. W.T. Beale of Erie and Mrs. Vera Vogan of Titusville; five sons, William Condon of Titusville, and Clarence, John, Thomas and James, all of Oil City; two sisters, Mrs. Annie Fink and Mrs. Mary Sullivan, both of Oil City; 19 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
     Friends may call at the Steffee funeral home in Oil City. Funeral services will be held at St. Joseph's church at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Interment will be in St. Joseph's cemetery.'
