FAMILY HISTORY: MADDEN

THE FAMILY OF WILLIAM IRVIN & MARY ANN KARNS

CENSUS INFORMATION:

Mary Ann Madden married her first husband, Daniel M Hogan in 1895 and he died 7 months later - so there is no census showing them as a married couple. Mary Ann (Madden) Hogan married her second husband, William Irvin Karns in 1898, but I have not yet found them in the 1900 Census:

Mary Ann's younger brother William lost his wife shortly after the birth of their son William in January 1911. As a widower with four young children, William must have found caring for a newborn baby difficult. At some point, young William went to live with his childless aunt and uncle, and was with them at the time of the 1920 Census:

5: Probably due to an error on the part of the Enumerator, Mary Ann was listed further down the page than her husband and nephew.

Some time after the date of the 1920 Census, William and Mary Ann adopted their nephew, and he used the surname Karns for the rest of his life.
