FAMILY HISTORY: MADDEN

THE FAMILY OF EDWARD & ANNA HANRAHAN

CENSUS INFORMATION:

I have not been able to find either Edward or Anna in the 1860 Census and do not know if they were married at that time. They first appear together in the 1870 Census:

1870 CENSUS OF CLARION TOWNSHIP, CLARION COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA:
NAME: AGE: SEX: COLOR: OCCUPATION: BIRTHPLACE:
Edward Hanrahan 50 M White Laborer Ireland
Anne Hanrahan 30 F White Housekeeper Ireland
Mary J Hanrahan 9 F White - Pennsylvania
James P Hanrahan 5 M White - Pennsylvania
Margaret A Hanrahan 2 F White - Pennsylvania
NOTES:
1: Living in Clarion, Clarion Township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania.
2: The family's surname was spelled "Handrahand" in the census schedule.
3: The value of Edward's real estate was $600 and the value of his personal estate was listed as $100.
4: They were all listed as having parents of foreign birth.
5: Mary J Hanrahan was listed as having attended school during the the year.

By 1880 a younger son, Edward, who was born on 27 June 1875, has joined the family but their children, James and Margaret, are not listed and I suspect that they died young:

1880 CENSUS OF CLARION TOWNSHIP, CLARION COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA:
NAME: COLOR: SEX: AGE: RELATIONSHIP: CONDITION: OCCUPATION: BIRTHPLACE:
Edward Hanrahan White M 50 - Married Farmer Ireland
Anne Hanrahan White F 39 Wife Married Keeping House Ireland
Mary J Hanrahan White F 17 Daughter Single At Home Pennsylvania
Edward A Hanrahan White M 5 Son - - Pennsylvania
NOTES:
1: Living in Clarion, Clarion County, Pennsylvania.
2: The family's surname was spelled "Hinrahin" in the census schedule.
3: The ages given in any Census are usually always suspect and here they are questionable.
4: They were all listed as having both parents born in Ireland.

Edward Hanrahan died in about 1884 and by 1900 Anna and their youngest son were living with Mary Jane, who was by then the wife of Cornelius Aaron:

1900 CENSUS OF CLARION TOWNSHIP, CLARION COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA:
NAME: RELATION: RACE: SEX: AGE: CONDITION: OCCUPATION: BIRTHPLACE:
Anna Hanrahan M in Law White F 60 Widow - Ireland
Edward Hanrahan B in Law White M 26 Single Foreman Pennsylvania
NOTES:
1: Living in Clarion Township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania.
2: Anna was listed as having been born in April 1840 but her death certificate records her date of birth as 15 April 1834. Edward's date of birth is given as June 1875, which appears to be correct.
3: Edward's full occupation was "Foreman, Printing Office".
4: Anna's parents were listed as having been born in Ireland. Edward's mother was listed as born in Ireland but his father was listed as born in Pennsylvania, which I believe is an error.
5: The full Census information will be included on Mary Jane (Hanrahan) Aaron's page.

I have searched the 1910 Census for Anna Hanrahan (under a variety of spellings) and for her daughter Mary Jane Aaron, but cannot find them. It is possible that they were missed by the census takers. Anna next appears in 1920, living with her daughter:

1920 CENSUS OF CLARION TOWNSHIP, CLARION COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA:
NAME: RELATION: RACE: SEX: AGE: CONDITION: OCCUPATION: BIRTHPLACE:
Mrs Anna Hanrahan Mother White F 79 Widow None Ireland
NOTES:
1: Living in Clarion Township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania.
2: Anna's parents were listed as having been born in Ireland with their mother tongue being Irish.
3: The full Census information will be included on Mary Jane (Hanrahan) Aaron's page.

This is the last Census entry for Anna (Madden) Hanrahan, who died on 28 May 1927.
