The Family of William W and Mary A Madden: Census Returns

William Madden and Mary Marbey were probably married in about 1881, but I haven't been able to find either of them in the 1880 census and the 1890 Census was accidentally destroyed. They first appear as a family in the 1900 Census, by which time they had two children and had settled in Washington, D.C.:

2:	William and Mary's parents were listed as having been born in Ireland.
3:	The 1900 Census records the month and year of each person's birth: William, May 1857; Mary, December 1862; James E, May 1883; and Nellie M, August 1885. It also records that William and Mary had been married 19 years and that Mary was the mother of 2 children - both living.
4:	The children were listed as having been at school 9 years, and the whole family could read and write.

2:	William and Mary's parents were all born in the Irish Free State (Now the Republic of Ireland).
3:	William was a Congressional Messenger and Nellie was working for the U.S. Government.
4:	This census recorded a person's age at the time of their first marriage. William was 25 and Mary was 19.
5:	Their house, which they owned free of mortgage, was valued at $14,000.

3:	The spaces for occupation were left blank. William and Nellie were listed as "Unable to work".

The 1940 census is the latest available at this time. Mary died in 1942, William died the following year, and Nellie continued to live at the family home until her death in 1955.
