The Life of Mary Madden

Mary Madden's life, like her elder brother John's, is a bit of a mystery. At the time of the 1860 Census, she was a 2 year old child living with her parents in Porter Township, Pennsylvania. By 1870 Mary's mother had died and the family had settled in Brady's Bend, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, but 12 year old Mary is not listed living with them and it is believed that she died in childhood.

Thinking that she may have gone into service, as many young girls did at that time, I searched for Mary in the 1870 and later censuses, but have been unable to find any record of her.

When Mary's elder brother Patrick died in 1923 she was not listed in his obituary, and this, I think, is further evidence that she died at a young age.

1:	Mary Madden's place of birth is based on where the family were living in 1860. No record of her birth or baptism has been found thus far.
