At the time of their first wedding Lillian would have actually been only 17 years old - so too young to marry without her parents' permission. It may be that this first marriage was made null and void and the couple were married again 5 months later. This time presumably with her parents' blessing - and in a Catholic church.

NOTES:
1: At the time of their first wedding, Henry's name was recorded as Harry Henry Smith and he was listed as Church of England. Lillian's name was recorded as Lillie Lena(?) Newberry and she is described as a Roman Catholic. Lillian's mother's name was recorded as Hannah Rogers.
2: At the time of their second marriage Lillian was described as a spinster, aged 17 (her correct age), living with her parents at 65 Winifred Avenue, Toronto. Henry Smith, aged 26, was living at 11 Carlaw Avenue, Toronto.
3: Henry may have actually been a couple of years older than he claimed to be. He may have been born as early as 1881, making him about 29 when he married Lillian.
4: The fact that Henry's father's surname is different than his own may indicate that he was illegitimate, or that this was actually a step-father.

NOTES:
1: I have found very little information about this marriage. I only know that Lillian Smith and Harold Albert were married before the date of her father's death on 5 October 1945 as she is listed in his death notice as "Lil (Mrs H. Albert)".
2: According to my late uncle William Greengrass - who knew more about my family than just about anyone else - Lil was a carnival worker and traveled constantly. She had a regular booth called Laughing Water at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto every year until the late 50's or early 60's.
3: Much of the above information is based on scanned images of birth, baptism, marriage, death, burial, and census records at www.ancestry.co.uk.
