FAMILY HISTORY: BOOCOCK

THE LIFE OF RICHARD JORDAN

Richard Jordan, the eldest son of Thomas Jordan and Agnes (Boocock) Jordan was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts and raised in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, U.S.A.

I know very little about his life except that he visited England whilst serving in the American Armed Forces and met some of his English cousins for the first time.

My late cousin Elsie (Swarbrick) Banks told me that she was working in the shoe shop one day when her father's cousin Beatrice Boocock came into the shop with a handsome young American soldier.

According to Elsie, Beattie was making quite a fuss about her nephew from America and Elsie was embarrassed by it all. She said that Beattie introduced the young man to Elsie as, "your cousin Richard from America."

Elsie realized that Richard was the son of her father's auntie Agnes in Pawtucket. Being introduced at her place of work on a busy day - with a shop full of customers waiting to be served - didn't bode well with Elsie and she didn't have the opportunity to chat with Richard or find out where he was staying or how long he would be visiting. Beatrice swept him out of the shop as quickly as they'd entered and she never saw him again.

Many years later Elsie received the Burial Card for her cousin Richard and a photograph of his grave:

NOTES:
1: The above grave photo has nothing written on it and I have no idea who the man in the photo is.
2: The date of death on the grave marker is different from the date on the burial card. I usually tend to believe the date on the grave marker - but either may be correct.
3: The above burial card and photo were provided to me by the late Elsie (Swarbrick) Banks.
