FAMILY HISTORY: NORRIS

THE FAMILY OF ROBERT GEORGE OSBORNE & ELIZABETH FOSTER

FURTHER INFORMATION:

Voyage to America
Robert and Elizabeth Foster sailed from Liverpool on 25 April 1925 aboard the SS Samaria, arriving at Boston, Massachusetts on 3 May. Although Robert had apparently been to the the U.S.A. once before, this was their first trip to America together. Robert's older brother was living in New York and they were paying him a visit.

The following is the information recorded on the ship's passenger list as they arrived in Boston:

Robert G.O. Foster was 58 years old and a secretary; Elizabeth was 56 years old and a housewife

They were both British English and could read and write English

Their last permanent address was Penwortham, England

Their nearest relative in their home country was Elizabeth's younger sister - Mrs Sarah Johnson, of "York Villa", Leyland Road, Penwortham.

They had paid for their own passage, and had more than $50 in their possession

Robert had been to the U.S.A. (New York) once before, in 1905, but this was Elizabeth's first visit

They were going to visit Robert's brother Captain W.A. Forster (sic) in Millbrook, New York, and intended to stay for a maximum of 60 days

They were not polygamists or anarchists and were in good mental and physical health - with the exception that Robert was missing his third finger on his left hand and his first finger on the same hand was bent

Robert was 5' 7", with a fresh complexion, white hair and grey eyes

Elizabeth was 5' 6", with a dark complexion, grey hair and grey eyes

Robert was born in Bristol, England; Elizabeth was born in Croston, England

Robert's Immigration Visa was issued at Manchester on 7 April 1925, number 452

Elizabeth's Immigration Visa was issued at Manchester on 20 April 1925, number 471

NOTES:
1: With Elizabeth's Visa being issued on a later date than Robert's - and only 5 days before they sailed - I suspect that the decision for her to go with Robert was a last minute one.
