NOTES:
1: There are various reasons why a couple would have gone to the expense of being married by Licence. One is that they were in a hurry to get married, another is that - for personal reasons - they didn't want the Banns read out in church on three consecutive Sundays. In John and Sarah's case, the fact that Sarah was 5 or 6 months pregnant may have had something to do with it.
2: At this time, the last positive record I have of Sarah Johnson is in April 1925. Sarah's sister Elizabeth and her husband Robert Foster were sailing to the U.S.A. and gave Sarah's name and address as their nearest relative in England. Sarah is apparently not buried with her husband in Penwortham Churchyard.
3: The above information is from Marriage and Baptism records held at the Lancashire Archives in Preston, from the headstone inscription at Penwortham Church, and from various on-line sources.
