FAMILY HISTORY: NORRIS

THE FAMILY OF JAMES MADDOCK HENDERSON

James Maddock Henderson is a mystery man. I know that he was born in the Liverpool area in 1852. The GRO index reference for his birth is 4th Quarter 1852 West Derby 8b 248.

Legend has it that Mr Henderson was a man of "dubious character" and I suspect that he was more interested in Elizabeth's money than anything else. Perhaps (and hopefully) Elizabeth got wise to him and this is why she is listed as living apart from him in the 1891, 1901 and 1911 Census Returns and why she does not mention him in her Will.

In the 1861 Census James was living with his widowed mother. I had to go back to 1851, before James was born, to find an entry that included his father:

2: S. I. L. = Sister in Law, Hannah Maddock was Catherine's sister.
3: The above information is taken from the census returns on microfiche at the Lancashire Archives.

In 1871 James was living with his widowed mother and was an Apprentice Wine Merchant:

1871 CENSUS OF BOOTLE, LIVERPOOL, LANCASHIRE:

Catherine Henderson Head Widow F 53 Licensed Victualler Eastham, Cheshire

In the 1881 Census I found a James Henderson visiting at the home of Francis Moon at the same time that Francis' brother George William Moon and his wife (Elizabeth's sister) Margaret were visiting:

1881 CENSUS OF MANCHESTER, LANCASHIRE:

NOTES:
1: Staying at "Manchester Arms", Long Mill Gate, Manchester. (RG11-3992, folio 6, page 6)
2: George Moon was described as Brother/Visitor.
3: George Moon and James Henderson's full occupations were Wine & Spirit Merchants.
4: There were other people living/staying at the pub in this Census.
5: The above information is taken from the census returns on microfiche at the Lancashire Archives.

As we know that James Maddock Henderson was an apprentice Wine Merchant in 1871, I suspect that this James Henderson is James Maddock Henderson and that his association with George Moon led to his meeting Elizabeth (Norris) Chadwick.
