Arthur QUIGLEY:

I can find no record of the baptism of Arthur Quigley, but he may have been the son of James and Jane Quigley.

James Quigley and Jane Brade, both of Preston, were married on 7 Jul 1823 at St John's Parish Church in Preston. They were married after Banns by Thomas Raven, Curate, and the witnesses were William Allen and Margaret Steward. The bride, groom and both witnesses signed the marriage register with an X.

Jane Brade was originally from Lancaster and James Quigley was from Neston in Cheshire. Soon after marrying in Preston they moved to Neston, Cheshire and started their family. At some point they seem to have returned to Preston as their son John was apparently born there in about 1825, however they were back in Neston by the time of their son Thomas' birth in 1827.

At the time of the 1841 census James Quigley, a shoemaker, aged c. 35, was living in Back King Street, Liscard, Cheshire with his wife Jane, aged c. 35, and their seven children, John, an agricultural labourer, aged c. 15; Thomas, aged 12; James, aged 9; Ellen, aged 7; Ann, aged 5; Richard, aged 3; and William, aged 1. All but Jane were listed as having been born in Cheshire, although in 1851 their son John, who was by then married and living at another address on Back King Street, gave his place of birth as Preston, Lancashire.

Unless I can find a baptism record for Arthur Quigley, we can never be sure if he was the child of James and Jane.

Ellen QUIN:

I suspect that Ellen Quin was the daughter of Patrick and Sarah Quin, and is the young lady who was listed in the 1841 census living with her recently widowed mother in Simpson Street, Preston. That Ellen was listed as a linen reeler, and when Ellen Quin died on 29 Jan 1848 she was listed as a reeler. She died at Shepherd's Yard, Preston, which at the time was the home of Edward and Elizabeth Quinn.

It is unclear how Ellen Quin may have been related to Edward Quin, but as they were of a similar age, he may have been her brother or some other close relative.

At the time of the 1851 census Edward Quinn, a labourer, aged 37, was living at 4 Shepherd's Yard, Preston with his wife Elizabeth, aged 39, and three children, Anne, aged 17; Elizabeth, aged 9; and William, aged 10 months. Also staying with them was a visitor, Catherine Maguire, aged 22. Edward was born in Scotland, Elizabeth Sr and Anne were born in Ireland, Elizabeth Jr was born in Cumberland, William was born in Preston, and their visitor was born in Blackburn.

Some time after 1851 the family moved to Manchester where their daughter Margaret was born in about 1854, but by 1861 they had moved again, this time to Liverpool.

At the time of the 1871 census Edward Quinn, a labourer, aged 56, was living at 5 Broom Street, Liverpool, with Elizabeth, aged 60, and his married daughter Elizabeth Giles, a laundress, aged 39, and her two children, Elizabeth Giles, aged 4; and William Giles, aged 2. Elizabeth Jr had married Peter Giles on 16 Jun 1865 at St Peter's Parish Church in Liverpool. Peter Giles was a mariner and may have been at sea on the night of the census.

Edward Quinn, of Broom Street, Liverpool, died later that year and was buried on 12 Nov 1871 at the Ford Catholic Cemetery in Liverpool, aged 56. His widow Elizabeth was still living at 5 Broom Street in 1881, the last record I can find of her.

Note: When William Quinn's birth was registered in 1850 his surname and mother's maiden name were entered as Quin.

The Family of Peter QUIN:

Peter QUIN:

Although no age was recorded when Peter Quin was buried in May 1822, he was almost certainly the Peter Quain (sic) who was listed in the 1820 Catholic census of Preston. At that time he was aged 70, and living with Patrick, aged 30; Sarah, aged 27; Jane, aged 3; and Ellen, aged 2. They were listed as living in "Friargate up Hodgson Yard".

Richard QUIN:

I can find no record of the baptism of Richard Quin, and it may be that he was baptized privately at home. As he lived in Friargate, it is likely that he was the son of Patrick and Sarah Quin. When he was buried in St Wilfrid's Cemetery on 19 May 1827 his age was recorded simply as "infant".

Patrick QUIN:

The 1832 Preston electoral rolls list Patrick Quin, a hawker, living at 101 Friargate, but by the time of his death on 23 Jan 1840 he was living at either 23 or 25 Hope Street, Preston. He was buried in St Wilfrid's Cemetery on 26 Jan 1840, aged 49 years.

By the time of the 1841 census Sarah Queen (sic), aged c. 45; was living in Simpson Street, Preston, with six children, Ellen, a reeler of linen, aged 24; John, a boatman, aged 15; Elizabeth, aged 10; Rosanna, aged 8; Catherine, aged 6; and Peter, aged 4. They were all listed as having been born in Lancashire. Patrick and Sarah's son Bernard was not at home on the night of the census, but was a boatman and may have been travelling at the time. He married Ellen Windles on 27 May 1844 at St John's Parish Church in Preston, and gave his father's name as the late Patrick Quinn, a hawker. Bernard died on 3 June 1850.

Death Notice:

"On Monday last, Bernard Quin, Spring-gardens, aged 26."

Published in the Preston Chronicle, Sat., 8 Jun 1850

By the time of the 1851 census Sarah Quin, a hand loom weaver, aged 56, widow, and her son John, a cotton carder, aged 14, were lodgers at 188 Moor Lane, Preston, the home of Thomas and Alice Bolton. Sarah was born in Macclesfield, Cheshire and John was born in Preston.

Sarah Quin died at Grosvenor Street, Preston on 17 Jul 1855, aged 62. St Wilfrid's Cemetery had closed the previous year but I can find no record of Sarah's burial in the newly opened Preston Cemetery, or in either St Ignatius or St Augustine's churchyards.

Note 1: The Ellen Quin buried on 2 Feb 1848 may have been the daughter of Patrick and Sarah who was listed with them in the 1820 and 1841 censuses.

Note 2: The spelling of this family's surname varied from one record to another, but the most common spelling was Quin, even though the more common spelling today would be Quinn.

Mrs Mary QUIRK:

Mary Quirk, the widow of John Quirk, a mechanic, died on 11 Mar 1849, aged 27.

Death Notice:

"on Sunday last, Mary Quirk, Melbourne-street, 27;"

Published in the Preston Chronicle, Sat., 17 Mar 1849

Mary Quirk was the daughter of Thomas Richardson and Ann Butler, who were married on 15 Feb 1819 at St John's Parish Church in Preston. At the time of the 1841 census Thomas Richardson, a cotton weaver, aged 43, was living in Mill Street, Preston with his wife Anne, aged 44; and their eight children, Matthew, a cotton weaver, aged 21; Mary, a cotton weaver, aged 19; Elizabeth, a cotton weaver, aged 17; Jane, a cotton weaver, aged 13; Thomas, a cotton mill (worker), aged 11; James, aged 8; Evan, aged 4; and Joseph, aged 1. They were all listed as having been born in Lancashire.

Mary's late husband John was the son of Thomas Quirk and Ann Law, who were married on 31 Dec 1821 at St Mary the Virgin Parish Church in Blackburn. John may have been their only child, as Thomas died young and Ann married Samuel Nelson, a widower, on 16 Jul 1827, also at St Mary the Virgin Parish Church in Blackburn. At the time of the 1841 census Samuel Nelson, a cotton spinner, aged c. 40, was living in Leeming Street, Preston with his wife Ann, aged c. 45; Ann's son John Quark (sic), a mechanic, aged c. 15; Samuel's son Samuel Jr., aged c. 15, and their three children, Francis and Alice, both aged 10; and Charles, aged 5. They were all listed as having been born in Lancashire.

John Quaark (sic), bachelor, machinist, of full age, of Bury, the son on Thomas Quaark, stone mason, and Mary Richardson, spinster, of full age, of Bury, the daughter of Thomas Richardson, weaver, were married on 14 Oct 1844 at St Mary the Virgin Parish Church in Bury, Lancashire. They were married after Banns by F A Power, Curate, and the witnesses were John Sutcliffe and Ra. (Ralph) Crompton. The bride and groom signed the marriage register with an X. Ralph Crompton was the Parish Clerk and was a witness to a large number of weddings during that time.

John Quark (sic) died in Preston in 1846, and was buried at St Mary the Virgin Parish Church in Blackburn on 26 Apr 1846, aged 23. His wife survived him by just three years. They had no children during their brief marriage.

Note 1: Mary's father Thomas Richardson, aged 45, of 121 North Road, was buried in St Wilfrid's Cemetery on 23 Nov 1842.

Note 2: John and Mary's surname was spelled variously as Quirk, Quirke, Quark, Quarke, and Quaark..
