FAMILY HISTORY: MADDEN

THE FAMILY OF JAMES EDWARD MADDEN SR

CENSUS INFORMATION:

James Edward Madden was born in Pennsylvania in 1882, and the family appear to have lived for a time in Indiana, where his sister Nellie was born in 1885. The 1890 Census was accidentally destroyed, so the first Census to list James Edward was the 1900 Census, by which time his parents had settled in Washington, D.C.:

3: James was listed as having been at school 9 years, and could read and write.

James Edward Madden was married in October 1910, and by 1920 had lost his wife and one of his daughters. By the date of the 1920 Census, he had only been widowed for a day or two:

Tragedy was to strike the family again when, in 1923, Madonna Madden was hit by a truck and killed, aged 10 years. About 3 years later James Edward remarried and by 1930 had purchased a home in Washington:
