| 1: | The marriage certificate record the further information that James Madden was Roman Catholic and Mary Newberry was Anglican. No middle names were used on the certificate. |
| 2: | James Gerald was a very large baby and his mother was very petite. The delivery was difficult and forceps had to be used. In the struggle the baby's skull was crushed and he was left badly brain damaged. According to his father, the baby lived 2 weeks and died in his arms. |
| 3: | Mary's marriage was not a happy one and James abandoned his family when his children were very young. Mary's strict Catholic father would not allow her to divorce her wayward husband but after her father's death Mary decided to end the marriage. |
