FAMILY HISTORY: BOOCOCK

THE FAMILY OF THOMAS & AGNES JORDAN

CENSUS INFORMATION:

Agnes Boocock, like many of her family, is difficult to find in the Census returns. She would have been about 6 years old at the time of the 1881 Census but she is not listed with her widowed mother - but I did find an entry for an Agnes Beaucock that I believe is actually Agnes Boocock:

1881 CENSUS OF PRESTON, LANCASHIRE:
NAME: RELATION: CONDITION: SEX: AGE: OCCUPATION: BIRTHPLACE:
Agnes Beaucock Orphan - F 6 Scholar Preston, Lancashire
NOTES:
1: Listed at St. Joseph's Sick Institution & Orphanage, Theatre Street, Preston. (RG11-4238, folio 105)
2: I believe her description as an orphan to be a mistake and that she was actually a patient. I doubt very much that her mother gave her up for adoption no matter how difficult things may have been for her.

I have not been able to find Agnes in the 1891 or 1901 Census returns and believe that she had probably emigrated to America before 1891, when she would have been 16 years old. She may have traveled abroad to work as a nanny or servant - as many young British girls did at that time.

NOTES:
1: St. Joseph's was a Roman Catholic hospital and orphanage and still stands in Theatre Street, although it is currently being converted into flats.
2: The above information is from the 1881 Census held on microfiche at the Lancashire Record Office.
