THE FAMILY OF THOMAS & JANE SLATER

CENSUS INFORMATION:

 

In 1871, Jane was an unmarried girl, aged 23 years, still living with her parents. Thomas was married to his first wife and they were almost certainly expecting their first child. By 1881 Thomas' first wife had died, he had married Jane Swarbrick, and the couple had settled in Preston where their first child was born:

2: I suspect that Mary Jane Swarbrick was actually Jane's older sister, Mary Ann Swarbrick.
3: Mary Elizabeth Slater, Thomas' daughter by his first wife, was staying with her grandparents at this time.

2: It seems unusual that someone would name two daughters Mary, but Mary Elizabeth and Mary Agnes had different mothers, so perhaps Thomas just liked the name.
3: Margaret Tinkler was the widowed sister of Jane's father, Robert Swarbrick.

At the time of the 1911 Census Thomas Slater was in the hospital recovering from an accident of some kind. Jane started to list him on the household schedule but crossed him off:

NOTES:
1: A patient at The Preston Royal Infirmary, Preston, Lancashire.
2: The census records that Thomas had been married 40 years and had 8 children - 5 living and 3 dead. It may be that he and his first wife had 2 other children that did not survive infancy.
