FAMILY HISTORY: BUCKNER

THE LIFE OF SUSAN BUCKNER

FURTHER INFORMATION:

At this time I know little about what became of Susan Buckner after she and her husband separated c. 1905.

I believe that they never actually divorced and know that Susan was still being listed as married and using the surname Buckner many years later.

At the time of the 1911 Census, Susan and her daughter Edith were staying at the home of her brother-in-law, Charles Buckner and his family:

1911 CENSUS OF TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA:
NAME: SEX: RELATION: STATUS: BIRTHDATE: AGE: BIRTHPLACE: OCCUPATION:
Susan Buckner F Sister-in-law Single Jul 1873 37 Ontario None
Edith Buckner F Niece Single Oct 1892 18 Ontario None
NOTES:
1: Living at 164 Booth Avenue, East York, Toronto, Ontario.
2: Susan was listed as Single in the Census...wishful thinking perhaps?
3: Strangely, Edith is also listed living with her father in the 1911 Census.
4: Their religion was listed as Christian.
5: The dates of birth given are out by a year.
6: While listed as of English origin, all were listed as of Canadian Nationality.
7: The above information is taken from scanned images at www.ancestry.co.uk.

Sometime in 1919, Susan - along with her daughter and son-in-law, Alex and Edith MacIver and their three children, travelled to Bermuda.

They returned to Toronto via New York City. Alex made the voyage home in January 1920 and the rest of the family followed in March of that year.

LIST OR MANIFEST OF ALIEN PASSENGERS FOR THE UNITED STATES
IMMIGRATION OFFICER AT PORT OF ARRIVAL, 29 MARCH 1920:
NAME: AGE: SEX: STATUS: CALLING: Nationality: RACE: BIRTHPLACE:
Susan Buckner 44 F Married None Gt. Britain English Toronto, Canada
NOTES:
1: The family were "First Cabin" passengers, travelling on the SS Fort Hamilton from Hamilton, Bermuda to Toronto, Ontario, via New York.
2: For the full information see the Ship's Records for Alex and Edith MacIver.
3: The above information is taken from scanned images at www.ancestry.co.uk.

It is only supposition at this point, but I suspect that Edith (Buckner) MacIver stayed closer to her mother after her parents separated. Her siblings, Ernest and Alma, seem to have stayed with their father - or returned to live with him when they were older - as each of them listed their father's address as their address in various documents.

Susan appears to have been living with her daughter Edith and son-in-law Alex as the Immigration Manifest listed them all living at 5 Millbrook Crescent, Toronto, Ontario.
At this time, this is the last record I have of Susan Buckner.
