Joseph Herbert Vaughan Atkinson was the youngest child of William Atkinson and Elizabeth Cross, who were married on 14 February 1871 at St. Walburge's
Catholic Church in Preston and had 5 children: 1) Mary Ellen, who was born in Preston in 1872 and died the following year 2) James Hollinshead, born in Preston in 1874 3) Ellen, born in Preston in 1876 4) William Ewart Aloysius, born in Preston in 1881 5) Joseph Herbert Vaughan, who was born in Blackburn in 1884. During the 10 years between the 1881 and 1891 Censuses, the family appear to have moved a couple of times, including a brief spell in Blackburn, where

Joseph Herbert Vaughan Atkinson married Alice Swarbrick in Preston on 11 January 1909 and William Ewart Aloysius Atkinson married Sarah Ellen Quinn in Preston in 1910. By the night of the 1911 Census only Ellen was still unmarried and living at home: |

William purchased a private grave in Catholic Section, E-114, at Preston Cemetery in June 1872 following the death of his infant daughter Mary Ellen.
She was buried on 25 June 1873, aged 1 year. The grave also contains a Mary Atkinson, who was buried on 9 June 1894, aged 61 years; as well as Alice's parents, George
and Ellen Swarbrick, and William and Elizabeth's son Joseph Herbert Vaughan and his wife Alice (Swarbrick) Atkinson. William and Elizabeth are buried in grave A-511 in the Catholic section of the cemetery: William Atkinson, aged 81 years, of 9 Melling Street, Preston, engineer, was buried on 7 November 1925 Elizabeth Atkinson, aged 85 years, of 62 Brackenbury Street, Preston, was buried on 17 January 1931. |
