In 1868, William's uncle, Hugh Norris of Croston, died and William was one of several nephews and nieces remembered in Hugh Norris' Will. This may have been why William's son Henry, who was born in 1868, was given the middle name Norris - and the inheritance may have been the beginning of a change in William's financial situation. Sometime after 1871 William and Ellen returned to Preston, where they purchased a large villa in the Ashton-on-Ribble area of the town. This home, Elder Villa (known as originally as Elder Grove), was pulled down in the 1940s and replaced by a smaller home and a small block of flats. |
