FAMILY HISTORY: SWARBRICK

THE FAMILY OF ELIZABETH WHITESIDE:

 

Elizabeth Whiteside was the daughter of Jonathan Whiteside & Ann Hindle, who were married at St Helen's Parish Church in Churchtown, Garstang, Lancashire on 26 July 1814:

Jonathan and Ann had at least five children, all baptized at St Helen's Parish Church in Churchtown:

By the night of the 1841 Census, Jonathan, Ann and their children had settled in Anderton, near Chorley:

3: The J after Robert and Jonathan Jr's occupations stood for Journeyman, meaning that they had completed their apprenticeships.

The following year, the unmarried Elizabeth Whiteside gave birth to a daughter in Anderton. Possibly to avoid embarrassment, Elizabeth took her baby to the nearby village of Rivington to be baptized:

The baptism entry included the letter B in the margin, which probably stood for "bastard".

By the night of the 1851 Census the family had returned to the Garstang area:

Jonathan Whiteside died in 1853, aged 66 years, and was buried in the churchyard at St Helen's Parish Church in Churchtown on 26 December 1853 by James Pedder, Vicar. Burial number 1595.

Ann "Nanny" Whiteside died in 1871, aged 82 years, and was buried in the churchyard at St Helen's Parish Church in Churchtown on 24 February 1871 by Walter Cooper. Burial number 586.

 

NOTES:
1: The Whiteside family were members of the Church of England and I have not found any record of Elizabeth converting to the Catholic faith either before or after marrying Robert Swarbrick.
