Richard Ignatius Swarbrick was born 14th April 1892, the second of five children born to Thomas and Sarah [Swarbrick] Swarbrick. In 1911 he was living with his parents in Preston and apprenticed as a printer in the family printing business. He married Queenie Ethel Luscher on 25th May 1915 at St Wilfrid's Catholic Church, Preston. He served initially with the Veterinary Corps and then was transferred to the RFA. He was part of the force sent to Northern Russia towards the end of the war and was based in the Archangel - Murmansk area. He returned home in 1919 to find that his wife had died in the influenza epidemic, leaving their two children in the care of grandparents. He subsequently married again and worked in the family printing business in Preston. He died on 10th October 1969 at Preston.
