FAMILY HISTORY: MALTMAN

THE FAMILY OF JOHN EBENEZER & HARRIET JANE MALTMAN

CENSUS INFORMATION:

John Ebenezer Maltman's early life was spent in and out of the workhouse or various children's homes. He was probably born in a workhouse and at the time of the 1841 census, he and his younger sister had been moved to a children's home outside of London:

At the time of the 1851 census John Ebenezer Maltman was still unmarried appears to have been lodging with Harriet Jane Swift's family in London. At the time, John was a Royal Navy Reservist but earned his living as a merchant seaman. On the night of the 1851 census, John was almost certainly at sea.

Later in 1851, John married Harriet Jane Swift in London. By 1861, probably due to his work and Royal Navy commitments, the family moved between London and Liverpool. On the night of the 1861 census they were lodging with Harriet's family (who had also made the move to Liverpool) and John was, once again, at sea.
