FAMILY HISTORY: MALTMAN

THE FAMILY OF JOHN MALTMAN

CENSUS INFORMATION:

1841 CENSUS OF ST PANCRAS, LONDON, ENGLAND:
NAME: SEX: AGE: OCCUPATION: BORN IN THE COUNTY?
Mary Ann Maltman F 40 Charwoman No
Charles William Maltman M 2 - Yes
NOTES:
1: Inmates at the Strand Union Workhouse, London. (H.O.107-686/16, folio 8, page 13)
2: Charles William was born in Yorkshire, so the description of him being born in the county is incorrect.

1841 CENSUS OF TOOTING GRAVENEY, LONDON, ENGLAND:
NAME: SEX: AGE: OCCUPATION: BORN IN THE COUNTY?
John Maltman M 13 School No
Jane Maltman F 6 School No
NOTES:
1: Inmates at Mr Drouet's Establishment for Pauper Children, Tooting (H.O.107-1068/6, folio 23, page 8)
2: John and his sister Jane were probably moved out of the overcrowded workhouse to what was considered a better facility. In fact, it was a horrid place, as described at www.workhouses.org.uk/Drouet.

Although I can't be sure, I suspect that John Maltman had emigrated to Canada before the night of the 1841 census and sent for his family once he was established in Toronto. The 1842 Ontario census seems to indicate that John's family had not yet joined him in Canada - however, Mary Ann must have died in Toronto in 1842 as John remarried in August of that year.

1842 CENSUS OF TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA:
Name of the Head of Each Family:  John Maltman
Proprietor of Real Property:  Margaret E Cullen
Trade or Profession:  Ban Box Maker
Number of Natives of England Belonging to Each Family:  1
Number of Years each Person Has Been in the Province When Not Natives Thereof:  2
Number of Persons in the Family Above 30 and Under 60 Years of Age: Married  1
Single .
Number of British Wesleyan Methodists in Each Family:  1
NOTES:
1: Living at Hospital Street, near Bay Street, Toronto. (Microfilm C-1344)
2: The 1842 census is not very helpful from a family history viewpoint but it appears that John Maltman was a lodger in the home of Margaret Cullen and that his family had not yet joined him in Canada.
3: The census schedule is quite large but I have left out the many questions that were left unanswered.
4: Hospital Street is now called Richmond Street West.

Unfortunately, the 1851 Canadian census for the city of Toronto appears to be missing.

By 1861 John had married his second wife and had three further children (with 2 surviving). In contrast to the apparent financial problems he had back in England, once settled in Toronto John seems to have prospered.

1861 CENSUS OF TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA:

2: C. W. (Charles William) was incorrectly listed as female.
3: Rebecca and George Maltman were attending school.
4: 'Canada W' was short for Canada West - the former name of Ontario, and 'Wesleyan M' was short for Wesleyan Methodist.
5: The last three people shown were listed as members of the family but were almost certainly lodgers.
6: Further information recorded was that the family lived in a 2 story - 1 family house, that John had $400 capital invested in business in real or personal estate, had raw material (for the business) consisting of 8 cords of pine valued at $48.

By 1871 John Maltman had taken his family out of Toronto to the wilderness of Lake Huron:

1871 CENSUS OF NOTTAWASAGA, NORTH SIMCOE, ONTARIO, CANADA:

NOTES:
1: Living on Nattawasaga Bay, Lake Huron, Simcoe County, Ontario.
2: 'W Meth' was short for Wesleyan Methodist and 'C Meth' was short for Canadian Methodist.
3: Although not listed as such, Susan Woodland was almost certainly a lodger.

I'm not sure if Nottawasaga was intended to be a long term move or not, but John Maltman died in Toronto in October of 1880. By 1881 Mary Louise Maltman was living back in Toronto:

This is the last census record Mary Louise Maltman, who died the following year.

2: All other census information is taken from microfilmed copies held at the Archives of Ontario.
