NOTES:
The marriage of Robert Seed and Ellen Hayhurst took place during a period in English history when people of all faiths (except Jews and Quakers) were required to marry in the Church of England. Many Catholic couples would have a Catholic ceremony in addition to the official 'legal' marriage.
As their marriage took place before the start of civil registration, which began in 1837, there is no marriage certificate. The information given for the Catholic ceremony comes from a transcription, which only recorded the brief details shown above, and the information from the C of E wedding is from the original church marriage register - both held at Lancashire Archives. Click on the image to see a larger version.
In the All Hallows register, Robert Seed and both witnesses signed their own names. Ellen Hayhurst signed with her X.
Married in the same church on the same day was Gregory Walmsley and Ann Hayhurst. This marriage was also witnessed by William Seed and Richard Dugdale, and it is likely that Ann Hayhurst was related to Ellen Hayhurst - perhaps her sister.
Mitton - also known as Great Mitton - is a village on the Lancashire/Yorkshire border and was, at the time of their marriage, described as being in Yorkshire.
The above information is taken from a variety of sources, including baptism, marriage and burial records held at the Lancashire Archives in Preston, as well as scanned images of Census returns and other records at www.ancestry.co.uk.
