The Family of Ellen Blackburn

Ellen's parents, Thomas Blackburn and Jane Hindle, were married in 1875 at St John's Parish Church in Preston and had a total of 8 children.

The eldest, Jane Alice (born c. 1876) never married. She dated Leo Swarbrick for a time before he began dating her younger sister Ellen. Jane Alice lived with Leo and Ellen after their marriage and stayed with them until she died of a sudden heart attack in her bedroom at their home on Leyland Road in Penwortham

Ellen was born 27 December 1877.

Elizabeth (born c. 1880) married Richard Helm and had a fruit and vegetable shop in the Plungington Road area of Preston. They had at least one child, a daughter called Jane.

Robert was born c. 1881 and died before his first birthday, c. 1882.

George (born c. 1883) married Emily Nelson and had children including daughters Doris and Emily, and a son George Blackburn Jr.

Cicely was born c. 1885 and died c. 1886, less than one year old.

Thomas Jr. (born c. 1887) was an amateur comedian. He never married.

John, their youngest was born and died c. 1889.

who died Sept. 6th 1914, aged 59 years.
who died Aug. 24th, 1915, aged 62 years.
Also Jane Alice, daughter of the above,
who died July 24th 1943, aged 67 years.
At Rest.
Also of Ellen Swarbrick, sister of the above,
died Feb'y 14th 1948, aged 70 years."

NOTES:
1:	Although George Leo is not listed on the headstone, Ellen and George are buried together. This plot, in the Church of England section of Preston Cemetery (Section BB plot 312), was purchased by Thomas Blackburn Sr. upon the death of his son Thomas Jr. George Leo's son Leslie, a stone mason, was supposed to add his father's name to the headstone but never did.
2:	The infant children, Robert, Cicely and John are not buried in the family grave and were probably buried in public graves, as was common at the time.
